Yesterday I had a beef burger and it was good. A few days before that I had some god awful “cheesy bacon” sandwich from my student union because there was nothing vegetarian and appealing to eat. I didn’t feel bad about eating meat, although I wished the sandwich had tasted better and the burger had come sooner in the restaurant. It was a little cold but still tasted really good.
Conclusions
I guess you can say that I failed my 30 days without meat but I believe that this experience has been far more fulfilling than if I hadn’t made the commitment in the first place. I have learned that I should not make knee jerk reactions to things I read or see. I also learned after the first week that being a vegetarian didn’t fit well with my outlook on life. I can’t be true to myself and not at least allow myself the opportunity to eat meat if I want to.
I think the more important thing that I realized was that it is more important to be ethical in your choice of food and lifestyle in general than to commit to one particular lifestyle choice. Things like buying locally grown and reared food is better for the economy and also for the environment. Fair trade products also help to make the world a better place and I am happy to buy them, providing they are reasonably priced.
